Have you ever wondered what was in your engine that made it work? Have you ever wanted to skip taking your car in to the shop for maintenance because you knew it would break the bank? Have you ever felt you had been over charged by a shop but couldn't figure out how?

Have you ever felt you might feel more comfortable when your kids go off into the night if they knew more about the car?         YOU ARE NOT ALONE! 

 

My wife and I talk about some of these things at times and we have kids and want them to save money and be safe when they drive their cars some where. She told me that since I know all about maintaining and fixing up cars I should teach other people and help them learn about their car. That night, The Backyard Mechanic was born!

About Us

 

When I was in High School I needed an elective class, so I took Auto Shop. Little did I know that the shop class experience would shape my entire life.

 

As I progressed through my adult life I was able to maintain my own family vehicle fleet, which consisted of mostly older cars. I started to think about all the money I've saved over the years and it must be in the thousands. I took a career in the automotive aftermarket working at used car dealerships and auto parts stores. 

 

When my children were old enough to begin driving I started to teach them how learning about their car would benefit them as well. I recommended that they attend Auto Shop class like their dad did. It wasn't until then that I came to learn about how shop class was dropped from the public schools.

 

I thought about the lack of opportunity for people of all ages to learn about their cars. I heard stories about how people were ripped off by unscrupulous mechanics. It was at that time that my lovely wife suggested I hold maintenance classes to help people with their vehicle maintenance. The Backyard Mechanic was born!

Half Day Session:

   Explanation of Systems

   Checking Trouble Codes

- Oil and Filter Change

- Checking All Fluids

- Changing a Tire

- Checking for Tire Wear

- Checking Belts and Hoses

Full Day Session:

- All the Above PLUS:

- Starting and Charging System

- Brake Wear Inspection

 

- Cooling System Checks
